MEETING MINUTES

MAY 21, 2003

CARNEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

 

Meeting called to order at 7:10 p.m. with 13  members present.

Officers present were President Meg O'Hare, Vice President Romi Shah, Secretary Marilyn Ryan, Recording Secretary Joanne Krause, Treasurer John Ryan, and Sergeant at Arms Pat Rooney. 

Distinguished guests were Delegate Joseph Boteler, CIA Board Member, and Jennifer Przydzial, Reporter for the Northeast Reporter.

 


Minutes of previous meeting read by Recording Secretary Joanne Krause. Motion to approve minutes was  made by Pat Rooney, seconded by Romi Shah.  Motion passed.

 


Treasurer's Report:                      

 

Previous balance was $1497.13

Receipts were $20.00

Disbursements were $45.45

Current balance is $1471.68

 

Copy of report has been filed for audit.

 


Committee Reports:

 

A.            Membership:  Vice President  Shah distributed an updated membership list to the Officers.

 

B.         Zoning:    President O'Hare read a letter from the County concerning the property at 9614 Harding Avenue stating the owner would be subjected to a $15,000 fine if the property is not cleaned up by the deadlines set by the County.

 

Ruth Baisden gave an update on the issues addressed at the Zoning Commissioner's Hearing regarding the Honda Dealership on Harford Road.  Regarding the issue of light pollution, she provided Honda with the name of a lighting consultant and they said they would hire same.

 

Regarding the Escalante property on Sixth Avenue, he is still operating in violation of the County Code and is being cited and given a deadline to meet.

 

Regarding 12th Avenue, the County's Americans with Disabilities Act representative has not yet been contacted regarding inaccessibility by a handicapped resident of Thornewood Court to the proposed new road.  

 


Unfinished Business:

 

Regarding the Veterans Memorial, the question was raised as to who would maintain the area.  Ruth Baisden suggested contacting the Police Department's "JOINS"  program for their help.  A discussion was had about the feasibility of putting up a flag pole.  Delegate Boteler said it was his understanding that the Memorial's architect said he would put up the flag pole for us.  The benches from the Boy Scouts are in the process of being installed.

 

Ruth Baisden gave a summary of what led to the Joppa Road corridor study and a rundown on the open house meeting on May 14, 2003.   She reported on subsequent conversations she had with Karin Brown of the Planning Office about the recommendations from that open house meeting.  As part of the streetscape plan, Mary Sue Rooney prepared a rendering of a Carney sign to be submitted as a recommendation.

 


New Business:

 

A community cleanup is scheduled for October 17-19.  Details to follow.

 

President O'Hare will have a Board Meeting in June to set up agendas for next year.  Delegate Boteler said he would be willing to speak on the County government/legislative process. 

 

Delegate Boteler thanked those who supported him in getting elected and spoke of his experiences as a new Delegate.  He is interested in establishing legislative liaisons with community and business associations to track bills of interest to them.

 

Jennifer Przydzial announced she will no longer cover our meetings.  Her replacement is Jennifer Shayne as of June 18.  Her e-mail is JSHAYNE@patuxent.com.
